*Please note: All volunteers in any ministry at Immaculate Conception Church must complete Safe Environment Training before serving in ministry.
“Receive what you are. Be what you receive….You are the Body of Christ and through you the work of redemption must go on. You are to be taken. You are to be blessed, broken and distributed that you may be the means of grace and the vehicle of eternal love” (St. Augustine).
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs) are members of the Assembly of the Faithful who assist in the distribution of Holy Communion. Typically, EMHCs also distribute Holy Communion to those who are unable to attend Mass, such as the sick, in hospitals, the elderly in nursing homes, and the homebound(ICC Visiting Ministry), thereby providing love, support and spiritual care to others in need.
The ordinary minister of Holy Communion is the bishop, priest or deacon. The role of The role of the EMOHC - the giving and receiving of the body of Christ - is a sacred duty, privilege, and a profound act of faith, which captures the essence of what it means to be a servant of the people of God at the Table of the LORD.
Some Requirements for Ministry
Membership of the parish
Age: Any man or woman 18yrs+, acknowledged by peers and pastor to be active Catholic.
Sacramental: A Confirmed practicing Catholic; if married, in a marriage recognized as valid by the Catholic Church.
Preparation: the faithful should be properly catechized on the following:
The ecclesial nature of the Eucharist as the common possession of the whole Church;
The Eucharist as the memorial of Christ's sacrifice, his death and resurrection, and as the sacred Banquet;
The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharistic elements, whole and entire, in each element of bread and wine (the doctrine of concomitance); The kinds of reverence due at all times to the sacrament, whether within the Eucharistic liturgy or outside the celebration.
